"Jeffery" is an old standard of Children's Corner patterns. I am not sure if it is still in print or not. I still have it in my stash though I haven't made one in a long, long time. It used to be my go-to for baby boy gifts. It is a classic style.
So classic that here is Baby Hank wearing the Jeffery I made for my Godson, 21 years ago. It is smocked with Ellen McCarn's Stick Horse. The romper is made using Imperial poly/cotton microcheck, lined with white Imperial batiste. All still available today.
Oh, how far we've come. That yoke could sure have used some German interfacing. I also have a tendency to use smaller piping now. I remember being so proud of stitching on the navy blue buttons with red thread. I thought I had hit the pinnacle of design choices. It didn't take much to tickle me. All that aside, our prince is a cutie in a vintage treasure.
Thank you, faithful reader, for all of the emails inquiring about the babies' transition abroad. I think they are all finally settling in. Princess has turned into a full fledged toddler with all of the fun and challenges that brings. Baby Hank has taken the change in stride. Mommy says he is growing like a weed and the dog, aka Car-car, is lapping up the fenced in yard. She can hardly get him to come inside. Lastly, Mom and Dad have finally recovered from a wicked case of jet lag.
My shoulder is slowly getting there. It has three weeks to be "Done". I've got places to go.
Your "Jeffrey" is wonderful. I remember one of the first smocked things that I did for my younger daughter with the not so tiny cording/piping. I was so pleased to buy a whole box of the baby cording at the wholesaler (25 yrs ago). I think I still have a few yards left and consider it gold. Before I went out of business, I squirreled away many yds of batiste, broadcloth and micro-checks. We have one store in Nashville that still carries Imperial brand of fabric and I hope they never stop carrying it!

I love seeing classic clothes being worm by the next generation. Baby Hank looks precious in the Jeffrey family heirloom. I kept most of my children's smocked and heirloom clothes and now they are being worn by my grandchildren. Besides, they babies come more quickly than I can sew and smock. Like you, I'm glad I have a stash to draw from.

ReplyDeleteI have that pattern in my collection, too! I can't recall if I ever used it (I may have purchased the pattern used, so that accounts for its ragged condition). Your version is great; thanks for sharing it.

ReplyDeleteI have that pattern and used it a lot when my boys were young. I haven't thought about it again until now. Maybe I will have a grandson to sew for one of these days :)

does anyone know where I can get childrens corner pattern Handsewing 1 and "Grace"
ReplyDeleteGrampatty, I would try a google search aswell as places like ebay or etsy. I found the Handsewing 1 at several online heirloom sites, Baltazor's in New Orleans, Elegant Stitches in NC and Heirloom Sewing for Children. Baltazor also appears to have the Grace pattern. Sometimes it takes so detective work to find these out of print patterns.
