It is finis! For some reason this gown began to feel like it would never be done. But it is sewn, washed and pressed and will now patiently await some precious babe to fill it. They can bring one of those on just any time. :) Just teasing. There is something I am learning in the world of mothering, that some things are out of your control and out of theirs. And it is best not razzed about too often. I know they are more impatient than I. In the meantime I will keep sewing and praying.
I did alter the sleeve a tad from Mirella's original pattern. I made them a bit more full to get more of a puff sleeve look. And the tatting. For some reason attaching that tatting was a bear. It is not like I had never attached tatting before, but I didn't seem to be able to make this tatting behave. I am not a big fan of the loops at the top, though everyone assures me it is supposed to look that way. Well not in my world. Oh well. Least of my troubles.
The pleats on the back. I love how the weave of linen shows with the backlighting from the window. The simple things in life. And as a parting shot, as if you all haven't seen this embroidery enough. One more look. Of course in this picture it looks like the drawn thread squares aren't even, but in person they are. Must have been the camera taker's angle. Really must get her to do a better job.
Hi Martha,
ReplyDeleteThat daygown is simply to die for. You did a superb job.
Thank you for visiting me, and the suggestion about the button band. I will definitely look into that.
I am sure we will visit again! :) Have a great night!
Martha, it's exquisitely beautiful!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you both, I am very glad to have it done. Now I can just admire it. :)
ReplyDeleteThis daygown is so beautiful! I am enjoying your posts so much and appreciate the time it must take to put the tutorials together. I still feel strange writing people I don't know through blogs, but I just felt moved to say thank you! I found your blog somehow through an heirloom sewing search--I am a beginner heirloom sewer. I just made a batiste daygown using pintucks, and I'm interested that your tucks here are larger. They look so nice! I don't have a pintuck foot so this might be a good alternative for me to adapt my pattern--my painstakingly measured pintucks looked OK but not perfect. I do have one question if you happen to have a moment--did you do the buttonholes by hand or by machine? (And I guess a followup question--If you are still taking requests for tutorials, would you consider doing a buttonhole or pintuck tutorial?) In any event hope you have a great weekend and thank you for your blog! Hallie
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. I did the buttonholes by hand. I can achieve acceptable results with linen, I have never had good luck on other fabrics. With linen you count threads so it is easier to get a nice even shape. The tucks are very wide, not pin tucks at all. The finished tuck is half inch and they are done by hand, hemstitching in place. You can do pintucks by machine without a pintuck foot. For folded tucks use your edge stitching foot for uniformity.
ReplyDeleteI am always taking requests for tutorials. The next one up is shell stitch.
Martha...it is simply GORGEOUS!!! I love linen and your work is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy, I too love linen. It is so forgiving. Plus it is just a joy to work with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reply! And the pintucks tip. Best, Hallie
ReplyDeleteThis is positively angelic! Your work is breathtaking, Martha. I love how it is back lit in the photo too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bunny, it is still hanging in that window. Thank goodness there is a huge bush there to protect it from the sunlight. LOL
ReplyDeleteI love this beautiful daygown. You done good! Veeeerrryyy good! When that bebe does come, that will be one fine dressed bebe with a grandma like you. If I am a white glove lady at SAGA, will I get to touch it?
ReplyDeleteLOL, yes you can touch it with or without gloves. And you can see up close the booboos. Thanks for the kind words. Of course I have no intention of giving this one away but if I don't stop giving everything else away, when ever those grandbabies come they will be nekkid!
